Introducing the New Calx “Real Icon” Theme
![]()
Yes, ladies and gentlemen what you are seeing is correct. Talk about a hot theme! I caught up with the designer of this lovely theme and chatted it up a bit. I got him to give me some insights on how this Real icon theme became real. Here is what he said:
“I’ve always thought the Blackberry had been a bit neglected when it comes
to the design of its interface. The precision themes are great but I never
liked the typeface and I always thought the icons looked too similar at a
glance.
My girlfriend had an iPhone for a while, and I was always a bit jealous of
how click the interface was, with its clean Helvetica typeface and care
and attention to whitespace, layout and alignment. But I didn’t want to
do just another theme based around someone else’s operating system, like a
windows XP, or Mac OS theme, I wanted to do my own, from scratch.
What I wanted to do was to produce realistic, 3D scenes depicting exactly
what the functions of the particular icons were – so basically ‘real
icons’, with a bit of a sense of humour about them them too (Quill & Inkwell,
Gramophone, Bright red Telephone box etc)
I spent quite a long time producing the 50+ scenes, all the icons have to
be modeled, lit, textured and rendered too so it’s quite time consuming
creating the icons this way – but I think the final result is worth it.”
Yeah buddy worth it, it is. We have it for the Bold and 8900 right now but Storm is on the way. Here is the link to choose what you want.

PS I have seen a preview of his newest theme. It’s just as hot.
