Evernote for BlackBerry

Evernote is a wonderful note-taking, article-clipping, idea-saving application for desktop computers. You come across an article on the internet you’d like to save forever – not just as a link, but you want the entire text with pictures for safekeeping. Sometimes websites die and take their articles and images with them. This is one good place where Evernote comes into play.

Evernote for the desktop has several ways to save an article. My favorite is to select all the text and images you want, right click on the selection and Save to Evernote. Simple and easy. You can tag your text and images, and search them later either on your Evernote desktop client or on the web. Evernote will search and find your clippings via tags, word searches and even image searches! If you’re searching a particular word and it’s in an image, Evernote will bring up that image in its search. Amazing, isn’t it?
Recently, the folks at Evernote introduced Evernote for BlackBerry. Anything you’ve clipped to Evernote can be searched for in your BlackBerry. The uses are endless.
- Clip some directions and look them up when you’re trying to find your destination
- Maintain a list of restaurants you want to try – the list will be handy when you’re out trying to figure out where you’d like to eat
- Have a news article you saved that you want to show your friend? Let them read it on your BlackBerry from Evernote
- Shopping List? Keep it in Evernote and check against your list on your BlackBerry in the grocery
Evernote for the BlackBerry is an extremely simple application. There are only four image selections on the home screen menu: Text Note, Snap shot, Audio Note, Upload File, and the Search box.

Text Note – enter a text note of any type. Suppose you’re driving by a coffee shop you saw – you know the street you were on but couldn’t catch the coffee shop name because you were driving. Put it into a text note so you don’t forget the location. Later you can search on it from your BlackBerry, from the web, or from your home desktop client, find the note, then go out for a cuppa joe at this new place.

Snapshot and Audio Note – Snapshot and Audio Note are self-explanatory. Clicking Snapshot will open your camera, where you can take a picture and have it uploaded to Evernote. This is an excellent way to take a lot of pictures and have them saved, if you don’t have enough space on your phone or memory card. Let Evernote keep them for safekeeping. Audio Note will record voice notes, which you can also upload to Evernote.
Upload File – You’ve created a document full of great ideas on your BlackBerry when you were at the coffee shop. You don’t need to go through the process of hooking up your cables to transfer the document to your computer when you get home. Just upload the file right there in the shop to Evernote. It’ll be there ready for you to use from your desktop computer when you get home.

Search – I find the search box extremely useful. Using Evernote is extremely useful for keeping recipes I find on the internet or receive via email. I clip it, save it to Evernote, and tag it “recipes”. Later I can search and browse through recipes by entering “recipes” in the Evernote search bar on my BlackBerry if I’m out and about.

The more useful thing is if you remember the name of your recipe, or if you only remember that this particular recipe has potatoes in it. Search on potatoes and up come your list of recipes. Find your recipe and instant grocery list!
