This week RIM released the Facebook 1.5 version, an upgrade of the previous. The only thing I ever used the Facebook application for was for sending messages and occasionally checking statuses of friends. I didn’t like the mobile site because my screen was small.
Here’s what I like about the new version. I like seeing the comments under Status Updates. Messages and notifications show up in my messages, although it’s a bit redundant, since I can see the same in the Facebook application. I like that I can view the profile picture of others as though I was viewing pictures on an iPhone/iPod Touch. There’s also a feature merging my Facebook friends with my address book, putting their profile pictures in my address book. This is because the email in my address book is the same as my friends’ Facebook email addresses. From my address book, I can click on the menu key and go to the Facebook app and send a message to or write on a wall of that friend.~ It’s not a useful feature.~ It just adds to the aesthetic of the address book.
What I find lacking is that this version is still not close to what I can use on an iPhone and iPod Touch. From my Curve, I still have to go to the mobile site to view full profiles or my home wall with the news feed. The mobile site is the same as it was before. If I want to see my page as it appears on my computer, I use Opera Mini.
One other thing that I’ve noticed is that my messages and notifications~ have been disappearing daily. I installed a bigger SD card tonight and will see if that alleviates the problem.
My hope is that RIM is paying attention and will continue to improve the Facebook and other apps for its users. I’ve installed the Blackberry App World and will give some feedback on that at a later time.
To install, go to mobile.blackberry.com on your phone’s browser.
Anything I missed? Let me know what you think. Do you agree?
