Underlay.... seriously

I am a theme creator I have new icons I am interested in. on the home screen the black underlay and black box focus isnt a problem because the icons overlap it. but the MENU it'll show the icon but the dang underlay and focus us black. I dnt want an underlay I just want the icon! I went under my preference tab and select transperencies but it still wont work. How can I remove the black/ gray underlay and focus box from the menu key. I just want the actual icon there nothing underneath it!
