I've been able to load files successfully with the desktop manager but even following the directions, I've had difficulty with the OTA method...

I've had problems with OTA too...I need to read more about it, seems like it should be easier...but I don't use BB server...Anyway, the ALX file should be the file you need - the only one as far as I know...When your in desktop manager, and then load applications - add, my screen comes up with just the ALX file, even though the COD is on my PC...sometimes I've had to change the 'file type' at the bottom when the download was first down and then un-zipped...but otherwise its usually pretty smooth...
Not sure if it 'matters' - but I did have one theme that had about 7 ALX files, which put me off a bit - but I just used the desktop manager to move all of them to my phone ....it seemed to work ok....good luck resolving your issue...I think your in the right place...sometimes I would just make a mistake myself and then realize and feel foolish, not that this is your situation - I'm just saying I would re-trace all my steps and bump up against the instructions...if all else fails..reboot! good luck...

Let me try to help?
When installing a theme with the Desktop Manager the only file that is needed for the install purpose is the .alx file. Yes the .cod files are also in the same folder but the Desktop Manager does not care about the .cod file. the .alx file is the single file that controls the .cod files and they actually just set there waiting for the .alx file to activate them.
When installing a theme using the Desktop Manager the only file that needs selected is the .alx file. keep in mind the .cod files also need to be in the same folder but are not used for anything during the install. They are used but not by the person making the clicks.
OTA (over-the-air) are the same but use a .jad file. The .jad file is essentially the .alx file but used in a different way and meant for downloading from a host web site and installed direct to the phone.
it's important to download the ZIP file that contains the .alx and .cod files. Un zip that file to a folder. Open the Desktop Manager and point to that folder where the .alx file is. Click to install the (Themename.alx) file. The Desktop Manager will do the rest.
Note. On 7100 and 8700 phone the Theme_reader.alx file also needs selected the FIRST time you install a theme. After installing the Theme_reader.alx file one time there is no need to keep selecting it again when install a theme with the Desktop Manager.
OTA handles the Theme_reader file different. Each time you install a theme OTA you must first install the themename.jad file and then go back and install the Theme_reader file SECOND.
OTA is different in the sense of the theme_reader file. That MUST be install with each new theme install and always second AFTER the themename.jad file is installed.
8100, 8300, 8800 phones are much different and the theme reader file is no longer required because it's built into the operating system of the newer phones.
hope this helps.
