Lock icon by the signal icon?

I'm not referring to the keypad lock icon but the smaller icon on the top right hand corner next to the signal bar and "EDGE" icons. I wanted to know what it is for --usually pops up when I use my browser and the icon is unlocked--I've never seen it locked.

Can someone please explain what this is for?

i think that icon is similar to the lock icon you have on your browser
on your pc. open is an unsecured website, locked is a secure website (https).
